WFM On the Catwalk and in Video

The Wave Fibre Mill/ Milo & Dexter Collaboration Collection for Fashion Art Toronto is coming together beautifully, as we count the days to our first professional runway show.  So much more than the garments themselves, creating our segment involves creating a complete “look” for each of the twelve professional models who will walk the runway for us, from hairstyle to jewelry to footwear.  It has been an exciting and occasionally overwhelming learning curve!  The collection will be featured in a Group Runway Show at The Black Creek Assembly in Toronto’s Junction neighbourhood the first weekend of May.  We will announce the details as soon as we have confirmation of our day and runway time. Tickets will be available for purchase online at https://fashionarttoronto.ca.

Miles of footage has now been filmed for the virtual mill tour Wave and Heather will be leading for the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners webinar series, “Wool: The Long and the Fine of It”.  The Wave Fibre Mill webinar will take place on May 21st at 7:00 p.m. and will feature Wave and Heather narrating in real-time while a video documents the raw fleece’s journey through our milling equipment to become prepared roving, yarn, fabric and finished garments.  They will also share their experiences milling both long and fine wools with a special emphasis on Lincoln Longwool, which we milled especially for this series.

Our fourth installment of Faces of the Mill features Kiana, who is new to the Wave Fibre Mill team.  We are delighted to have her contributing her skills to production!  Her story appears below.

Nancy Howe, a talented instructor and friend of Wave Fibre Mill, is returning to teach one of her popular greeting card embroidery workshops in April.  Please scroll down for workshop details and registration information. Also, for the first time, Michelle Zikovitz is offering a beginner reed basket workshop in June. Working with reed is more manageable than willow and teaches the basic techniques needed for all basketry.

Interested in sharing your skills by teaching a workshop? We would love to hear form you!

Faces of the Mill – Meet Kiana!

We welcomed Kiana in mid-March as the newest member of the Wave Fibre Mill team.  Kiana honed her eye for detail and her creative flair in the floral industry, having worked as a floral designer in Richmond Hill before joining our mill production crew. Nowadays, she is most often on the mill floor where she assists with the many tasks involved in processing wool.

Outside of her working life, Kiana has many interests!  She enjoys drawing, painting, baking and cooking.  Most of all, she describes herself as a “Complete Book Nerd” with a lifelong love of seeking, collecting and reading antiquarian books.
